15-O: Demonstration, Geneva, Place des Nations, 1 pm

13:00 Oct 15 2011 Geneva, Switzerland

Description
Real Democracy Now – Geneva (RDNG) will join the call for global demonstration on Saturday 15th of October, under the common slogan “United for Global Change”. We publicly announce a peaceful demonstration for that day at the Place des Nations in Geneva, around 1pm, in front of United Nations main gate.

Our demonstration has 2 main goals:

1) CITIZEN DEBATE: We want to get together all citizens of Geneva that are unhappy with the current international political situation, more specifically the management of the economic crisis, to freely express their dissatisfaction, their opinions and proposals.

2) CITIZEN GLOBAL RESCUE PLAN: We want to propose, as a citizen assembly, 3 specific and urgent measures that we feel would represent a first step out of this economic crisis, without causing further problems for citizens:

2.1- YES TO CUTS (of privileges): end of tax havens.

2.2- YES TO AUSTERITY (for the rich): progressive tax - Buffet law for millionaires.

2.3- YES TO TAXES (on speculation): Tobin tax.

These 3 measures constitute part of our peaceful demand for a REAL DEMOCRACY NOW. Specifically, urgent reforms for Governments to really take control of the free-markets, and for Citizens to really control the Governments, not the other way round.

Our Demonstration as part of 15-O is also an Assembly: we want to open the debate to all citizens of Geneva. This will be the sixth time that RDNG occupies a public space, after having demonstrated peacefully at the Place du Bourg-de-Four (20/05/11), Bains de Pâquis (28/05/11), Place de la Navigation (19/06/11), Rue du Léman, in front of the Permanent Mission of Greece before United Nations (24/06/11) and Place de la Navigation (23/07/11).

You are just punishing those who are successful and not addressing the root of the problem. Two things: 1.) There are rich people that are not bankers. 2.) You are also part of the 1% in the big scheme of things. Why do you believe the rich should be paying more and more for everybody else? Either you want a just society or else don't be surprised with the results. I have read a lot about the financial crisis and the bailouts, I am not happy either, but these are the worst propositions I have come across yet.

@Capitalist You say you've read a lot but I highly doubt it. This is not about 'punishing' anyone, it is about trying to regulate the irresponsible financial practices that have ended in the worst global financial crisis for a generation. The Tobin tax aims to stop speculation by discouraging short term movement of funds between countries, which propagates destabilisation through markets. The Buffet law proposes a rise in tax for the very highest earners (over $1 million in the states) and was suggested by someone who was the richest man in the world (in 2008). And the end to tax havens is to stop citizens of countries making money in that country and not paying their taxes like everyone else because they can afford unscrupulous lawyers to get round loop holes in the law. Now, these are some of the most reasonable ideas I've come across and if you disagree with them I think it must be on ideological lines. In which case, I agree with the poster above me.
